FT 1: Whangarei Quarry Gardens

Our Steam Punk Models have moved from the railway to the Quarry Gardens.

The Quarry Gardens features subtropical plantings in an old quarry. There are several trails around the garden features, and up to a lake.
There is the lovely Quail Café there which is open from 9am to 3pm, with a deck overlooking the Waiarohia stream as it meanders through Whangarei Quarry Gardens.

Highlights of the gardens include:

  • Five Senses Garden – a combination of plants invites visitors to taste, smell, look, listen and touch.
  • Bromeliad Garden – A shady alcove beside a stream with dappled light and lush foliage.
  • Fragrant Camellia collection – A unique collection of rare fragrant camellias produced by two local plant breeders Jim Finlay and Os Blumhardt. Of the 115 fragrant camellias, 49 are not found in any other public gardens in the world.
  • Arid Garden – Striking cacti and succulents make for interesting textures.
