FT 1: Whangarei Quarry Gardens
The Quarry Gardens feature subtropical plantings in an old quarry. There are several trails around the garden and a lake at the far end.
Highlights of the gardens include:
- Five Senses Garden - A combination of plants invites visitors to taste, smell, look, listen and touch.
- Bromeliad Garden - A shady alcove beside a stream with dappled light and lush foliage.
- Fragrant Camellia collection - A unique collection of rare fragrant camellias produced by two local plant breeders, Jim Finlay and Os Blumhardt. Of the 115 fragrant camellias, 49 are not found in any other public gardens in the world.
- Arid Garden - Striking cacti and succulents make for interesting textures.
As with most gardens there is some bird life. Swallows feeding off the bugs on the lake, Californian quails are among those that have been photographed in the quarry.
There is also the lovely Quail Cafe which is open from 9am-3pm, with a deck overlooking the Waiarohia stream as it eanders through the Whangarei Quarry.
