FT 4: Waro Limestone Reserve
Waro Limestone Reserve at Hikurangi. 16km. north of Whangarei.
The lake was created by the extraction of limestone for the manufacture of cement at Portland. Limestone rock outcrops make striking photo opportunities.
The walk around both lake and rocks would take an hour but with camera in hand it would be more than double that.
Walking in a fig. 8 configuration and clockwise direction would work best to ease the one uphill bit. It is an easy to moderate walk with some undulations, ankle supporting footwear would be ideal.
A newly revamped skateboard park is close by for some action shots.
Wildlife are mainly Pukeko, Grey duck, Grey Heron and Dragonflies.
Sturdy footwear are recommended, the ground has been very wet recently.
Toilets are located at the car park near the lake.
